The Man

Dr Maitland Mackie, BSc (Agriculture), MA Hons (Economics), CBE, LL.D, FRAGS, is chairman of the family farming company which farms 1500 acres at Westertown, Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire, with an associated on-farm ice-cream manufacturing business utilising cream from the farm's 450 dairy cows and supplying 45% of the premium ice-cream market in Scotland (8% nationally), including five major supermarkets. Turnover of the combined farming and ice-cream operations is £10 million.


Three wind generators with a combined capacity of 2.5 mega-watts meet all the electricity requirements of the farm and ice-cream factory, leaving 50% to be sold into the National Grid. On a windy day, the generators are capable of producing up to £1200 worth of electricity per day.

Dr Mackie's many business involvements include Aberdeen University Development Trust and Aberdeen University Court. His is also a former director of Lloyds TSB Scotland and a former chairman of both the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) and Scottish Enterprise Grampian. He has also served on the Scottish Economic Council and is a former vice-president of NFU Scotland.


He enjoyed two five year terms on the Agriculture Food Research Council, is past Governor of Rowett Research Institute former board member of Scotland the Brand and was Chairman of Grampian Enterprise. Awards include his CBE, an Honorary Doctorate from Aberdeen University and the David Black Award for his pig industry work.
